Papaver Bread Seed Poppy

The blue-grey colour of these poppies is amazing! Papaver Somniferum Bread is called the bread seed poppy because this is the flower that produces the poppy seed on our bread. It is also called the opium poppy. Somniferum means ‘sleep-inducing’, and a soporific can indeed be concocted from the poppy’s seed pods. Although these white-pink flowers are beautiful, they do not have a long vase life. After flowering, attractive seedpods form that remain for many months – which is exactly what you want, after all. The poppy is very easy to grow and a beautiful asset to any flower garden. Although the flower does not produce any nectar, it is nevertheless a great favourite among all sorts of bees. They are attracted by the pollen released from the stamens.

Annual flower seeds

All our flower seeds produce flowers that are suitable for use as cut flowers. They are also used by professional nurseries and floriculture companies. For flower seeds to be considered high-quality, they need to have outstanding germination capacity and energy and therefore yield a high percentage of flowering plants. All seeds are annuals, which means that they have a lot of growing power: they go through all the stages – from a seed to a flowering plant that, in turn, produces new seeds – in the space of just one season. Most flowers bloom for about three to five months. A rule of thumb in this is that the more flowers you pick, the faster they will grow back! All our seeds are untreated and uncoated, and are also suitable as starting material for growing organic flowers.

Planting instructions:

  • Plant in moist soil to which the seeds stick for best germination.
  • Press the seeds down lightly, but do not cover them with soil.
  • Grow in fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Give them a sunny spot and sufficient protection from strong winds. Support if necessary.
  • Water regularly.

Sow Papaver Bread Seed Poppy immediately where you want these flowers to grow because the tender seedlings are difficult to transplant. Papaver seeds are very small, so you get a lot of them. Do not sow them too sparingly and as soon as they emerge you can thin them out to prevent overcrowding.
